China eSIM Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide for 2026

A China travel eSIM that shows no signal or has no mobile data is usually affected by one of five things: the eSIM line is disabled, the wrong SIM is selected for cellular data, data roaming is off, the APN is incorrect, or the plan has not activated correctly.

Do not delete the eSIM immediately. Many eSIM QR codes can only be installed once, and removing the profile may make the problem harder to fix.

Follow the checks below in order. Avoid changing several settings at the same time, because that makes it more difficult to identify the cause.

Quick Answer: Try These Fixes First

If your China eSIM is not working:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi so you are testing the eSIM connection.
  2. Confirm that the eSIM plan is active and still has data.
  3. Make sure the eSIM line is turned on.
  4. Select the eSIM as the cellular data line.
  5. Enable data roaming for the travel eSIM.
  6. Disable cellular data switching.
  7. Check the provider’s required APN.
  8. Turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds and then turn it off.
  9. Restart your phone.
  10. Try automatic or provider-supported manual network selection.

If none of these steps restores the connection, collect your device and plan information and contact the eSIM provider before deleting the profile.

Identify the Type of Problem First

Different symptoms require different fixes.

Start with the symptom that most closely matches what you see on your phone.

1. Turn Off Wi-Fi Before Testing

Your phone may remain connected to hotel, airport or public Wi-Fi even when that Wi-Fi does not provide working internet.

Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and check whether you can see a mobile network indicator such as:

  • 4G
  • LTE
  • 5G
  • A cellular signal icon

Then open a new website in your browser.

Testing with Wi-Fi disabled makes it clear whether the travel eSIM itself is providing internet access.

2. Check Whether Your Plan Is Active

Open your eSIM provider’s app, website or confirmation email and confirm:

  • The plan covers mainland China
  • The validity period has started
  • The plan has not expired
  • There is remaining data
  • The order was successfully completed
  • Any required activation step has been completed

Some plans activate when they first connect to a supported network in China. Others may begin when the eSIM is installed or when the user activates the plan in the provider’s app.

Follow the activation rules shown in your specific order rather than assuming every provider works the same way.

If you have not bought a plan yet, use our guide to buying a China eSIM before proceeding.

3. Make Sure the eSIM Line Is Turned On

Installing an eSIM does not always mean that the line is enabled.

On iPhone

Go to:

Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > select the travel eSIM

Make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.

On Android

The menu name varies by manufacturer. Look under:

Settings > Network & Internet or Connections > SIMs or SIM Manager

Make sure the China travel eSIM is enabled.

If the profile does not appear at all, it may not have been installed successfully. Follow the relevant installation guide:

4. Select the eSIM for Cellular Data

A common problem is that the travel eSIM is installed and enabled, but the phone is still trying to use the home SIM for mobile data.

Open your cellular or SIM settings and select the China eSIM as the preferred line for:

  • Mobile data
  • Cellular data
  • Internet access

You can normally keep your home SIM enabled for calls and text messages, but international roaming on the home SIM should remain off unless you deliberately want to use it.

5. Enable Data Roaming for the Travel eSIM

Most international travel eSIMs require data roaming because they connect through partner networks in China.

Enable data roaming only for the travel eSIM.

On iPhone

Go to:

Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > travel eSIM > Data Roaming

Turn it on.

On Android

Go to the travel eSIM under SIMs, SIM Manager or Mobile Networks, and enable Data Roaming.

Enabling roaming for the travel eSIM does not normally create charges from your home carrier. The important point is to confirm that you are changing the setting for the travel eSIM, not your primary home SIM.

6. Turn Off Cellular Data Switching

Dual-SIM phones may automatically switch back to the home SIM when the travel eSIM briefly loses signal.

On iPhone, go to:

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data

Select the China eSIM and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.

On Android, look for settings such as:

  • Switch mobile data automatically
  • Data switching
  • Backup calling
  • Auto data switching

Disable these options while troubleshooting.

This prevents the phone from silently moving data traffic to another SIM.

7. Check the APN

The Access Point Name, or APN, tells the phone how to connect to the provider’s mobile data network.

Some eSIMs configure the APN automatically. Others require a specific value from the provider.

Check the eSIM installation email, provider app or official help page. Enter the APN exactly as provided, including capitalization where applicable.

Do not copy an APN from a different eSIM company or an unrelated online guide. An incorrect APN can produce signal bars while preventing internet access.

Leave username and password fields blank unless the provider specifically gives you values for them.

After changing the APN:

  1. Save the setting.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode off.
  4. Test the connection again with Wi-Fi disabled.

8. Refresh the Network Connection

If the settings appear correct, refresh the phone’s network registration.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode off.
  4. Wait up to two minutes for the phone to register.
  5. If there is still no connection, restart the phone.

Apple, Google and major eSIM providers commonly recommend Airplane Mode and a restart because they force the device to establish a new network session.

9. Check Network Selection

Automatic network selection is normally the correct setting.

If your phone cannot register automatically, check whether your provider lists specific partner networks for China. You can then try selecting one of those networks manually.

Do not select networks at random. A network may appear in the list even though your eSIM plan is not authorized to use it.

After testing a supported network, return to automatic selection unless the provider instructs you to keep the manual setting.

10. Try 4G or LTE Instead of 5G

A phone may repeatedly search for 5G even when the local 5G connection is weak or incompatible with the plan.

Temporarily change the preferred network type to:

  • 4G
  • LTE
  • 4G/3G/2G automatic

If LTE works reliably, you can continue using it. For maps, messaging, payments and ordinary browsing, a stable LTE connection is generally more useful than an unstable 5G connection.

The eSIM Cannot Be Added or Installed

If the phone refuses to add the eSIM, check these issues before trying the QR code again.

Is the phone eSIM-compatible?

Not every model supports eSIM, even when another version of the same phone does.

Phones manufactured for or purchased in mainland China may have different eSIM capabilities from versions sold in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Europe.

Check the exact model number rather than only the product name.

Is the phone carrier-unlocked?

A carrier-locked phone may reject an eSIM from another provider.

On an iPhone, check:

Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock

If it does not show No SIM restrictions, contact the carrier that sold the phone.

On Android, the location and wording vary. Contact your mobile carrier if you are uncertain.

Has the QR code already been used?

Many eSIM installation QR codes are designed for a single installation.

If the eSIM was previously installed and then deleted, rescanning the same QR code may fail. Contact the provider and ask whether the profile can be reissued.

Do not purchase a second plan until the provider confirms that the original profile cannot be restored.

The eSIM Is Stuck on Activating

An eSIM installed before departure may remain on “Activating” until the phone reaches a supported network in China.

If you are still outside the destination country:

  • Keep the eSIM installed
  • Do not delete it
  • Follow the provider’s activation instructions
  • Wait until you reach the supported coverage area

If you are already in China, confirm that:

  • The plan has started
  • The eSIM line is enabled
  • Data roaming is on
  • Automatic network selection is enabled
  • Your current location has coverage

Use Airplane Mode and restart the phone before contacting support.

The eSIM Shows No Signal, SOS or Emergency Calls Only

This usually means the phone has not registered on a supported mobile network.

Check:

  1. The eSIM is enabled.
  2. The plan covers mainland China.
  3. You are within the plan’s validity period.
  4. Automatic network selection is on.
  5. Your phone supports the required network bands.
  6. You are not in a basement, tunnel, remote area or building with poor reception.

Move outdoors or near a window and try again. Then use Airplane Mode for 30 seconds and restart the phone.

If other people nearby have service but your eSIM still shows no signal, ask the provider which Chinese partner network your plan should use.

The Phone Has Signal but No Internet

Signal bars without internet usually indicate a data configuration or account problem.

Check these items:

  • The travel eSIM is selected for cellular data
  • Data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM
  • Cellular data switching is disabled
  • The APN matches the provider’s instructions
  • The plan is active
  • The data allowance has not been exhausted
  • No VPN or security application is interfering with the connection

Turn off any existing VPN temporarily while testing. Once ordinary mobile data works, you can determine whether additional app-access settings are necessary.

Mobile Data Works but Google or WhatsApp Does Not

If some websites load but Google, WhatsApp, Instagram or other international services do not, the eSIM itself may already be connected correctly.

The remaining problem may be how the provider routes internet traffic rather than an installation or APN failure.

The Connection Is Slow or Unstable

Slow performance does not always mean that the eSIM is incorrectly configured.

Possible causes include:

  • Weak indoor coverage
  • Local network congestion
  • A fair-use speed limit
  • Exhausted high-speed data
  • Unstable 5G coverage
  • Background downloads
  • Cloud photo or video synchronization
  • Hotspot use by another device

Try these steps:

  1. Move to another location.
  2. Switch from 5G to LTE or 4G.
  3. Close large downloads and cloud backups.
  4. Check the provider app for remaining high-speed data.
  5. Turn Airplane Mode on and off.
  6. Restart the phone.
  7. Run another speed test at a different time.

If your plan advertises unlimited data, read its fair-use terms. “Unlimited” does not always mean unlimited full-speed data.

Hotspot Is Not Working

First confirm that your eSIM plan permits tethering or hotspot use.

If hotspot use is supported:

  1. Make sure mobile data works on the phone itself.
  2. Turn the hotspot off and back on.
  3. Restart both devices.
  4. Forget the hotspot network on the receiving device and reconnect.
  5. Check whether the provider requires a specific hotspot APN.
  6. Confirm that you have not reached a hotspot or fair-use limit.

If mobile data works on the phone but not through hotspot, contact the provider before changing unrelated network settings.

Should You Reset Network Settings?

Resetting network settings should be a late-stage step, not the first solution.

It may remove:

  • Saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords
  • Cellular network preferences
  • Manually entered APN settings
  • VPN or related network configurations

Before performing a reset, record the provider’s APN and make sure you know your Wi-Fi passwords.

After resetting, you may need to reselect the eSIM as the data line and enable roaming again.

Do not factory-reset the entire phone to fix a normal eSIM connection problem.

What Not to Do

Avoid these common troubleshooting mistakes:

  • Do not delete the eSIM unless the provider tells you to.
  • Do not repeatedly scan a single-use QR code.
  • Do not enter an APN copied from another provider.
  • Do not enable international roaming on your home SIM by mistake.
  • Do not factory-reset your phone.
  • Do not buy another plan before checking whether the first plan can be fixed.
  • Do not share your complete QR code publicly.
  • Do not change multiple settings simultaneously.

Make one change, test the connection, and then proceed to the next step.

When to Contact the eSIM Provider

Contact the provider if:

  • The QR code is invalid or already used
  • The eSIM profile has disappeared
  • The plan shows active but cannot register on a network
  • The correct APN does not restore data
  • The plan has data remaining but appears blocked
  • The provider’s partner networks reject the connection
  • You see a persistent activation or provisioning error

Send the provider:

  • Your order number
  • The eSIM ICCID, if available
  • Your phone make and exact model
  • Your operating system version
  • Your current city or location
  • The displayed network name
  • A screenshot of the error
  • A list of the troubleshooting steps already completed

Apple also recommends having the phone’s IMEI and EID available when investigating an eSIM activation problem.

Only send account and device information through the provider’s official support channel. Do not post QR codes, payment details or complete account credentials publicly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I delete and reinstall a China eSIM that is not working?

Usually no. Many eSIM QR codes can only be used once. Check the line, data selection, roaming, APN and network connection first. Delete the profile only if the provider confirms that it can be installed again.

Why does a travel eSIM need data roaming?

International eSIMs normally connect to partner mobile networks in China. Data roaming allows the travel eSIM to use those partner networks. Make sure roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM rather than your home SIM.

Why does the eSIM say “Activating” before I arrive in China?

Some eSIMs cannot complete network activation until they reach a supported network in the destination country. Keep the eSIM installed and follow the provider’s activation rules.

What does “PDP Authentication Failure” mean?

This error commonly indicates an APN, plan provisioning or network authentication problem. Confirm the provider’s APN, refresh the network and contact support if the error continues.

Can Wi-Fi interfere with eSIM testing?

Yes. Your phone may continue using a weak or disconnected Wi-Fi network. Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily so you can test the cellular connection directly.

Should I select a Chinese network manually?

Use automatic selection first. Select a network manually only when your provider identifies it as a supported partner.

Do I need to buy a new plan if the eSIM has no data?

Not necessarily. First check whether the plan is active, whether data remains and whether the settings are correct. Contact the provider before purchasing another plan.

Final Troubleshooting Checklist

Before contacting support, confirm that:

  • Wi-Fi is off during testing
  • The plan is active and has data
  • The eSIM line is enabled
  • The eSIM is selected for cellular data
  • Data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM
  • Cellular data switching is disabled
  • The APN is correct
  • Airplane Mode has been used to refresh the connection
  • The phone has been restarted
  • Automatic or supported network selection has been tested
  • A VPN is not interfering with the test
  • The eSIM has not been deleted

If these checks do not restore service, contact the provider with your order, device, location and error information.
